Our collections

Also technically part of the History of the Book collection on the open shelves in the Barker Research Library are many volumes of reference books to support research into Archives and Special Collections. These include dictionaries, biographical registers of clergy, aristocracy, universities and schools, and the various guides of the Royal Historical Society. 

Access to original sources

The collections mentioned above are located at Palace Green Library.  Our opening hours during July and August 2025 are as follows, by appointment only (see below).

  • Monday 7th July: 10am to 4:30pm
  • Mondays 14th July to 25th August:  closed
  • Tuesday to Thursday: 10am to 4:30pm
  • Saturday: closed
  • Sunday: closed

Appointments are required for all visits, please use the enquiry form to book.  Appointments need to be made at least three working days in advance, and we will need to know the full list of document references or shelfmarks of the items you wish to consult before we can confirm your booking.
