Durham University Library and Collections - Pre-arrival information: Fabulous spaces to study

Fabulous spaces to study

We offer a variety of study spaces across campus to cater for all types of learning. Whether you want to study quietly on your own, work with others from your course or make use of IT and connect to the university network, there’s a space for you. There are spaces that allow you to work in groups, kitted out with large screens and collaborative tools, and there are also plenty of quiet, individual study spaces. Our spaces are creative and welcoming, with many having access to laptops and computers, and all with access to University Wi-Fi.

At our main University Library, Bill Bryson Library (often referred to as the Billy B) you will find:

  • 1,750 study spaces – mixture of bookable and non-bookable
  • 24/7 opening (in busier periods during term time)
  • Collaborative, quiet and silent study areas
  • Dedicated Disability Support team and pre-bookable DS study rooms
  • IT Service Desk
  • Wi-Fi, PCs and loanable laptops
  • Printing, copying and scanning facilities
  • Small Island Coffee - our Library cafe

We also have two other libraries with study spaces; Barker Research Library, located in the historic Palace Green Library where our archives and special collections are held, and ISC Library in Stockton-on-Tees, for use by staff and students living in the area.

Not only can you study in our libraries - we also have a number of designated study spaces available across the city, including Teaching and Learning Centre (pictured below) and Business School Study Space
