Winter Vacation Offer: Overview

Whether you are staying in Durham or spending the Christmas vacation period elsewhere, we will continue to support your studies and wellbeing.

Explore this guide to find details of Bill Bryson Library opening times, study space availability in Durham and online support.

Essential maintenance work – restricted access to areas

Due to various essential maintenance works being completed at Bill Bryson Library from Monday 13 December, there will be restricted access to a number of areas in the building. Visit our website for full details.

SCONUL Access scheme

Following a pause to the scheme during lockdown, some institutions will be running the scheme once more from 15 November 2021. However, Durham, along with a number of other institutions, has taken the decision not to re-join the scheme at this point. As this is a reciprocal scheme, this means that Durham students and staff will not be able to use it to access other UK HE libraries at present.

We will review our position in January 2022 and provide an update on our webpages.

Study Spaces at your College

Many colleges have their own libraries, which are managed independently from the University’s main library. The college libraries provide study space as well as information resources, which can be found by searching Discover.

For more details and opening hours, visit the links through our College Libraries Guide.

Library book loans

Please continue to renew your books as required during the vacation period. Remember they can still be reserved by other users, in which case you will need to arrange to return them, either using our bookdrop facility if you're in Durham or our free postal returns service.

If you have books you've finished with, please return them to the Library before you leave Durham. Our bookdrop facility next to the main entrance at Bill Bryson Library will be open throughout the Christmas period.
