Isolating in Durham

If you are required to self-isolate or have been advised to self-isolate through NHS Test and Trace, you are able to access items/resources from the Library through the following services:

  • Eresources – we have so many resources available online for you to access anytime, anywhere - our Electronic Resources guide will help you get started.

  • Off-campus access – to access our eresources easily, you can install the off-campus bookmarklet, viaDurham. Once it is installed in your browser, you can just click on the button and the web page will be reloaded via our on-campus proxy server (providing the Library has a subscription to the resource).

  • Scan and Deliver* – scanned copies of book chapters or journal articles can be sent straight to your inbox.

  • Proxy collection* – nominate someone from outside your household/who isn’t self-isolating to collect items from Bill Bryson Library on your behalf.

*Maximum of five requests per service. Requests will be processed within 7 days - please consider this and the length of time you have left to self-isolate when placing your request.

Making a request

To request an item through one of the services above, please complete our Resource Request form.

The form is also available via Discover and the Library Catalogue with links which will fill in the book details for you:

  • Discover - click on the "Request" link
  • Library Catalogue - view the full record for the book and find the link to "Request for people who are self-isolating" which is near the bottom of the page.

Other things you need to know...

  • You’ll be pleased to hear that we don’t need you to return any books to us during your isolation period – simply renew any items you currently have online through your Library account. However, you can make use of our free postal returns service during this time - you will need someone from outside your household/who isn’t self-isolating to take your items to the Post Office for you.

  • Recalls are due to be reinstated as of Monday 4 October 2021. If you receive a recall request during your isolation period, please don’t return your item – simply email us at

  • Currently, fines are only being charged on recalled items.
